Description: During this full-day, interactive training course, the instructor will focus on three key areas:

Pruning to maintain the right of way (ROW) - This classroom discussion will cover the various methods and procedures to use in ROW trimming. The main goal of this discussion will be to help attendees realize that there are better ways to manage the ROW and properly and safely perform these tasks. The instructor will also address how ANSI standards are applicable to tree pruning, ROW maintenance, and safety.

Review of safety techniques - The instructor will walk attendees through tips and techniques that are important when addressing ROW issues in their municipality, including traffic control and the safe operation of equipment and tools. He will also review court cases where legal action resulted from vegetation encroaching a public right of way.

Assessing trees for hazard and risk - Attendees will move outside for the afternoon and examine local trees for hazard and risk. Information learned during this hands-on activity will allow attendees to leave with a better understanding of trees both on and off the right of way.

Outline: During this workshop, the instructor will engage attendees in discussion about the following subject areas:
-Procedures for Right of Way Trimming

-Tree Pruning

-American National Standards Insitute (ANSI) Standards

-Safety Measures
-- Traffic Control
-- Equipment and Tools

-Tree Loss

Additional Info Who Should Attend The target audience is township managers, shade tree commissioners, facility (park) managers, supervisors, and roadmasters. Tree risk and right of way management are common issues with public trees, and risk analysis can help to limit the liability townships are exposed to. The instructor will talk about public relations issues, too.
